This concept for the Craigieburn Sports Stadium marks the first phase of a precinct-wide transformation – an essential step in delivering high-quality, future-ready sports and recreational infrastructure for a rapidly growing population.
The existing facility, with five multisport courts, faced significant challenges: aging infrastructure affecting operational efficiency, a disjointed site layout, and limited capacity to meet rising demand for indoor sports, such as basketball and gymnastics.
In response, the design expands the stadium’s current capacity to provide a total of 3,000sqm of indoor courts, new change facilities and administration areas to support the growth of local sporting associations. The wider masterplan positions the stadium as a complementary extension to the surrounding residential neighbourhood and better connected to the adjacent Craigieburn Gardens.
The concept also sets ambitious sustainability targets for this type of facility, designed to achieve 6 Green Star equivalency and Carbon Net Zero performance. The proposed extension features a 35-metre clear-span engineered timber portal structure, using sustainably sourced timber. The prefabricated cladding and insulation system is designed for efficient on-site assembly and future disassembly and re-use.
