A spatially efficient design solution that connects the campus
The design provides a spatially efficient and economical solution to maximise the wider development potential, while respecting the architectural heritage of the main building. By amalgamating activities within an affordable lightweight timber structure clad in durable brick, the new layout provides a welcoming amenity for the Chelsea Beach community and achieves a more cohesive, connected campus for students and staff.
A double-height circulation space divides the two wings of the new building. The shallow-roofed eastern wing houses a canteen and restrooms, while the west wing accommodates the three main gathering and learning areas under a dramatic skillion roof. With increased volume, the west wing not only provides a spacious environment for performances but also allows ample natural light from upper levels to flood the interior.
Externally, a striking colour contrast differentiates each wing, with the eastern flank enclosed by common red brick walls, mirroring the tone of its heritage neighbour. This deep red is continued onto columns, paving, window frames and soffit linings to maximise visual impact. A deep colonnade wraps around the three sides of the east wing, extending to a covered walkway that provides an all-weather link to neighbouring classrooms.
White concrete bricks enclose the adjacent multi-purpose hall, complemented by high-level translucent panels that allow natural light to fill these larger spaces. A flexible floorplan places the multi-purpose hall adjacent to the music room. Open for events, these spaces can also be separated by an operable acoustic wall to accommodate simultaneous activities. The art room takes advantage of its corner location, with high-level translucent cladding on the east and south walls providing abundant daylight. Timber decks on the west and south sides enable learning activities to extend outdoors.
