Bay Oval
Realising a vision for hosting international cricket fixtures in Tauranga
The only ICC rated timber cricket pavilion in New Zealand
Jasmax first prepared the 50-year masterplan for the 12,000 capacity Bay Oval situated at Blake Park in Mount Maunganui in 2007. The ICC World Cup cricket ground features a pavilion design inspired by the sweeping curve of the Oval’s boundary. The masterplan anticipated the facility functioning as a multi-level cricket facility, able to support training alongside day and night matches with outdoor nets, state-of-the-art lighting and high-performance wickets. Completed in 2013, the Oval provides a premium asset for the Bay of Plenty and has become a focal point for the community as well as a destination for international cricket fixtures.
The iconic pavilion design is redolent of the craftsmanship associated with this high-performance sport. Inspired by the refined lines of a willow cricket bat, the timber pavilion features a glulam post and beam structure in a unique radial arrangement. With views toward the Pacific Ocean and the Port of Tauranga, the interior layout was inspired by shipping containers and encloses specialist players facilities including changing rooms, recovery rooms and support rooms all designed to ICC World Cup standard. Field-side, full height glazing provides panoramic views over the pitch, encasing flexible players’ lounges.
