Contemporary design in an iconic heritage setting
Care was taken to ensure the new structure appears as a single storey when approached from the Main School Building and heritage forecourt. The exterior is clad in red brick, complementing the terracotta roofs of the iconic, mission-style Main School Building and neighbouring original library and centennial theatre (1965).
The building levels step down following the contours of Maungawhau, directing students along the primary pedestrian route to the knowledge centre, where each floor terminates in a monumental north-facing viewing window. Dark-toned roofing, metalwork and window joinery are deliberately understated, echoing the basalt upon which the school was founded — a defining feature of the campus gateways and landscape architecture.
Students are welcomed beneath a cantilevering canopy into an airy lobby extending the full width of the building. A dramatic skylight floods the heart of the space with daylight, augmenting the generous full-height perimeter glazing. The main library floor steps up from the lobby, while a double-height presentation space and cascading stair lead down to the lower library, where classroom spaces, meeting rooms and a senior student lounge are located.
