Aquinas College
A new wing supporting the growing demand for student accommodation at the University of Otago
A fresh identity and improved student experience for a much-loved institution
The 1950s era 148-bed student accommodation facility Aquinas College at the University of Otago has undergone a refurbishment and extension to accommodate growing student numbers and improve the collegiate experience for first year students.
The former Aquinas College gymnasium building has been replaced with a four-level, 66-bedroom wing. A new link building, comprising administrative offices and student common areas, connects the existing and new residential blocks, incorporating a generous entry that creates a welcoming front door to the college. An outdoor landscaped courtyard, which forms a green heart, is overlooked by the accommodation blocks, providing visual connection to the ngahere and manu (trees and birdlife) which characterise the site. In line with the University’s brief for a space students feel part of, which enhances the overall university experience, the design fosters opportunities for social connection and pastoral care.
Five key cultural design values are embodied in the design to enrich the college’s identity. These were identified by Aukaka in consultation with local iwi, Ngāi Tahu, and include Tomokanga (a welcoming entry) and Mauri & Mana (life force and power, expressed in the central gathering space for this community: the dining area). Taiao (natural environment) is reflected in the new landscaped courtyard. The values of Whakapapa (celebrating ancestry and context to create a meaningful sense of place), and Kaika Waewae (creating a sense of home away from home) are embedded throughout to ensure students are supported in their transition toward independent living.
