The Ernest Rutherford Building forms part of the University of Canterbury’s showcase science precinct, the Rutherford Regional Science and Innovation Centre (RRSIC). The five-storey complex is unique in Australasia for bringing together six scientific disciplines within a world-class facility designed to foster collaboration in inter-disciplinary research. The building includes state-of-the-art specialist teaching and research laboratories for physics, astronomy, chemistry, geology, geography and biological sciences.
Designed with transparency in mind, the layout of the Ernest Rutherford Building showcases a huge range of experimental activities taking place behind glass-fronted laboratories. The RRSIC is designed to stimulate innovation, excitement and ideas throughout the scientific community, as well as encouraging students to consider future careers in post-graduate research and R&D. This innovative and inclusive approach is also intended to encourage cross-pollination by enhancing visibility across disciplines and departments.
The Ernest Rutherford Building also connects to the Beatrice Tinsley postgraduate and staff facility, designed by Jasmax.
