Envisioning a sustainable, vibrant and prosperous future for Central West NSW
Engagement and exploration
Jasmax, IPA Partners and T‑Cubed were engaged by People, Place and Partnership (PPandP) to develop a visionary Strategic Destination Plan to transform the riverside areas of Coonamble, Gilgandra and Warrumbungle into a distinctive, regionally recognised tourism destination. The plan envisions a series of placemaking and infrastructure initiatives that celebrate the region’s unique natural beauty, rich cultural heritage and community spirit. Together, the initiatives focus on encouraging sustainable growth, regional resilience and economic diversification.
Bringing experience of regional tourism and working with First Nations peoples in Aotearoa New Zealand, Jasmax worked closely with PPandP to facilitate extensive engagement with the local communities of Coonamble, Gilgandra and Warrumbungle and indigenous peoples of Wiradjuri, Kamilaroi and Wailwan to align the visions with community aspirations. Through workshops, surveys and one-on-one interviews, the design team also gathered input from local businesses, community groups, Aboriginal Land Councils and other stakeholders to ensure a comprehensive understanding of their vision for future prosperity. The voices and aspirations of each local community have been heard and incorporated into the strategic planning process.
Following the engagement sessions, Jasmax identified a series of catalyst infrastructure projects aimed at enhancing the tourism appeal of Coonamble, Gilgandra and Warrumbungle, predominantly focused along the Castlereagh River, which connects the three towns. The plan proposes strategies for reinforcing connection between each town and the river, while prioritising its restoration and conservation, and acknowledging its cultural significance as a source of life. Additionally, the plan outlines various activation opportunities and public space interventions to enable greater public accessibility and broaden the diversity of recreational experiences within each town, while integrating heritage into the visitor journey.
