Greening the streetscape
One of the four design principles established in the 2019 Dunedin Central City Plan was to establish a ‘Green City’. In response, 90 street trees have been planted and 730sqm of garden beds have been introduced, transforming areas that previously had no greenery. This has led to one of the most successful biodiversity enhancements of any central city street in the country. The expansive gardens not only soften and animate the streetscape, but will also improve over time, attracting insects and native birds back into the city. The gardens also support best practice stormwater management, functioning as raingardens or passively irrigated beds that filter and manage stormwater runoff. The project restores a quality and character reflective of Dunedin’s identity as ‘one of the world’s great small cities’.
