Cromwell Memorial Hall
A centre for celebration and remembrance in Central Otago
Celebrating the values and rich history of Central Otago
Replacing its 60-year-old predecessor, the Cromwell Memorial Hall, Museum and Events Centre will provide a new and improved destination for events, creative expression and remembrance in Central Otago. Overlooking Lake Dunstan, the centre is designed to compliment the breathtaking natural landscape so unique to Cromwell and Central Otago.
A memorial commemorating the fallen from the last century’s two World Wars will be retained and relocated to the new building’s entry. The centre will feature a 400-seat auditorium space alongside a new museum that connects to the Old Cromwell Town and Heritage Precinct. Also included in the development will be a café, 40-seat cinema and community and event spaces overlooking the lakeside.
Working alongside local architect Jessie Sutherland of SA Studio, Jasmax’s South Island-based design team has focused on ensuring spaces will accommodate a variety of community needs. Design principles of connectivity, flexibility and adaptability will support the longevity of the centre as a vital cultural heart, ensuring it remains a valued asset that will meet the community’s needs for many years to come.
Jasmax is also working in partnership with Aukaha, the consultancy for Kāi Tahu, to ensure the design reflects the identity, history, values, and narratives of mana whenua.
Materials from the existing Cromwell Memorial Hall will be salvaged and assessed for repurposing within the new centre.
