Three districts define a New Zealand journey from sea to sky
The departures area is defined into three distinct districts: a reconfigured landside farewell space, a new and expanded security screening zone, and a new post-security dwell lounge and retail hub. The expansion doubles the available dwell space, increasing the duty-free footprint from 6,000 to 12,000sqm.
Guided by the narrative ‘A New Zealand Journey from the Sea to the Sky’, the richly layered design expresses a strong sense of place through materials, furniture and three-dimensional art installations. The artworks of Dr. Johnson Witehira (Tamahaki, Ngāi Tū-te-auru, Ngāti Hinekura) represent New Zealand’s bicultural foundation and multi-cultural identity. His works also carry the voices of three mana whenua groups – Te kitai-Waiohua, Te Kawerau and Te Ahiwaru – who were closely involved in the project.
