Aroha Health is a state-of-the-art private hospital proposed for Te Whanganui-a-Tara Wellington’s Newtown area, offering a premium standard of care, as well as advanced seismic resilience. With a focus on multi-specialty surgery, the client aims to support the growing need for comprehensive surgical services in Wellington. Located 400m from Wellington Regional Hospital, the facility will support pre‑, intra- and post- operative surgical services, and offer clinical support services including radiology, endoscopy, laboratory and pharmacy.
Currently, 10% of publicly funded elective procedures are outsourced to private hospitals. The expansion of private hospitals can therefore support the public sector and enhance the resilience of the healthcare system by relieving public waiting lists, providing timely access to healthcare for those in need.
The seven-storey hospital will include six operating theatres, 23 patient bedrooms, a four-bed high-dependency unit (HDU), consultancy rooms for additional health-related tenants in order to offer an integrated service, and a carpark. The project maximises the development potential of a City Centre Zone site, located on a quiet street near a main arterial traffic route. The design prioritises patient comfort and operational efficiency, with waiting areas, lounges and staff rooms located to the southeast corner of the building, offering a prime view over the adjacent Government House grounds.
Aroha Health will be built to IL4 (Importance Level 4) seismic standards and feature full base-isolation designed to protect both the building and its patients in the event of a major one in 250-year earthquake. The provision of an on-site diesel generator, clean and wastewater storage, and medical gas reserves will also allow Aroha to operate continuously in emergency mode for up to 48 hours. The facility also intends to meet the New Zealand Green Building Council’s Green Star sustainability standards.
