Architectural writers Andrea Stevens and John Walsh look at how Aotearoa New Zealand’s largest transport infrastructure project is helping reshape Tāmaki Makaurau Auckland.

They highlight the close collaboration between Grimshaw, Jasmax, WSP Architecture, City Rail Link Limited and Mana Whenua in designing stations and civic spaces that reflect the city’s cultural identity, history and future.

Drawing on Te Aranga design principles, integrated public art, te reo Māori station names and place-specific narratives, CRL’s stations were designed as enduring public spaces built for decades of growth.

Andrea and John’s story explores how transport and architecture can work together as ‘city-making’ forces. With CRL, that means bringing people within reach of jobs, learning, culture and public life — while shaping the stations, streets, buildings and spaces that give those connections meaning.
