Shaping a collaborative work culture
The award-winning design of international law firm DLA Piper’s new Auckland headquarters blends a sophisticated palette of natural materials with organic forms and fresh colours inspired by Tāmaki Makaurau and the Waitematā. The spatial arrangement draws on the concept of the flowing city, to establish a versatile, open working environment that promotes an interconnected and collaborative work culture.

The flowing city
The design takes inspiration from the geological foundation of Tāmaki Makaurau, as a city built on solidified lava streams and surrounded by water – a city in flow. The result is a light-filled interior landscape delineated by rounded forms.
A bespoke oak lined spiral staircase connects the two tenancy floors. This sculptural feature, with a spiral form and white exterior reminiscent of a seashell, provides a defining motif. Similarly curvilinear features in ceilings and floor details further emphasise the concept of the flowing city.

Multipurpose spaces for a modern office
DLA Piper’s ambition for enhancing interpersonal connection drives a layout that enhances staff mobility while allowing for quiet concentration of the periphery. This open plan approach also increases access to senior staff, providing a contemporary working approach for this diverse, modern law firm.
Underpinned by meticulous attention to detail, the resulting design reflects DLA Piper’s desire for a naturally inspired, progressive and professional environment.
