Jasmax Success at 2020 New Zealand Architecture Awards
Congratulations to our clients and project teams for their success at the 2020 New Zealand Architecture Awards, where Jasmax won all three of the Education Awards given out on the night.
Western Springs College Ngā Puna O Waiōrea scooped the country’s top education accolade, the Ted McCoy Award for Education, along with a National Education Award. This is the second year running Jasmax has received this top accolade with AUT University's Ngā Wai Hono winning the Ted McCoy last year. The University of Waikato Tauranga CBD Campus, which earlier this year won a top Australasian Learning Environment Award, also took home an Education Award.

"Can you place 1400 students in one large space and conduct 40 different classes at once? In the main building of this rebuilt high school, evidently you can, and that is not to mention the activities in the library and a slightly separated gymnasium. The architects have responded to the challenges of the Innovative Learning Environment, and the process of cultural and community engagement, with a high degree of skill, craft and patience. Incorporating Waioteao, the te reo Māori Immersion unit, and the Whare Tapere multi-purpose performance space, the redeveloped Western Springs College Ngā Puna o Waiōrea is a great human ark setting sail into the future of education. Perhaps some apple trees could have been included as outdoor teaching spaces, as timeless complement to such considerable contemporary achievement."

“The Western Springs College Ngā Puna O Waiōrea campus arranges its learning spaces openly around a multi-storey atrium activated by projecting meeting rooms, criss-crossing stairs and, most crucially, teaching teams that are configured in whatever way is needed to meet the ever-changing changing requirements of the school's students. The architecture thus responds impressively to the school's pedagogical approach and to an extensive process of community engagement.”

“Even with the new paradigm of Zoom teaching, we still need physical teaching spaces. This project is a game-changing university campus building that gathers diverse faculties spread around the city into a new purpose-built home. The design was carried out in full partnership with Ngāi Tamarāwaho and artist Whare Thompson, and integrated with Tauranga Council’s streetscape works. The clear articulation of the building layout, the integration of artworks, both internally and externally, and the heroic interior spaces and exterior courtyard/atea have created an inspirational learning environment and a clear basis for the future growth of the campus.”
