The Alan MacDiarmid Building (Kelburn) Victoria University is one of the first new buildings on the campus in many years. It sits at the campus’Southern end between The Cotton and Laby Buildings.

The primary goal for this building was to provide state-of-the-art post-doctoral research laboratories for the Schools of Chemical and Physical Sciences, and Biological Sciences.

Highest at the city end, the building steps down to street level at the suburban end. Height changes at the junctions with existing buildings to provide space that lend a stand-alone appearance to the Alan MacDiarmid Building; despite the full links with its neighbours at ground and first floor levels.

Inside, the design was driven by the need for flexible, adaptable functional areas to meet the highly specific requirements of laboratories and teaching spaces.

Public areas around these spaces were created to enhance current campus linkages and creating new, strong, East-West links was particularly important.

Overall Jasmax delivered a building that meets highly complex internal requirements as well as physically embodying Victoria University’s commitment to state-of-the-art teaching and research.
