Quad5 is a 6100m² office building in the heart of Auckland Airport’s business district. It is one of the first buildings to draw on the Airport’s larger masterplan and as such, its quality and performance needed to set the benchmark for future developments. The building aligns with access routes and hospitality quarters to reinforce the precinct centre, whilst also maximising the view of the surrounding Manukau Harbour and airport environment.
Auckland Airport wanted a building that would enhance the way they worked, so this project began with a substantial workplace strategy exercise, providing the design team with an in-depth understanding of Auckland Airport’s team, ethos, goals and operations.
The client direction for the project centred on the connectedness of staff. As a result, the design concept was developed ‘from the inside out’ by making workplace functions the key driver of the design form. The resulting open-plan working environment also makes the space easily reconfigurable for added resilience.
Sustainability was a key objective in the design of this building, with Auckland Airport targeting a 5-Star Greenstar rating. Through the use of sustainable principles and environmentally friendly materials, the building achieved a 5 Green Star Office Design Rating
Exposed thermal mass helps even out temperature fluctuations during summer and winter. Concrete precast panels with a high recycled content were used to the north and south elevations. The light-coloured roofing material reflects heat, reducing heat gain within the building. Particular care was also made to use high quality external materials that could respond to a marine and aviation gas environment.
Quad5 is not only a financial success but its design and location has also helped create a vibrant office community within the Auckland Airport Business District.
