Jasmax were invited to develop conceptual solutions to compensate for the historic loss of foreshore caused by the State Highway 20 alignment along Onehunga’s coastal edge.
As part of the Manukau Harbour Crossing (MHX) Project, Jasmax worked with the MHX to find a compromise between The Onehunga Enhancement Society (TOES) and Auckland City. In a foreshortened programme, several options were developed and workshops held with stakeholders.
Funding of almost $30M has been raised between NZTA and Auckland City based on the concept plan, which will form the basis for the pending design & construction tender process.
The reclamation is bound by ‘mud-crete’ and includes two man-made beaches that are aligned with the littoral drift, a jetty and boat ramps. A 10m wide iconic footbridge will connect Onehunga Lagoon Reserve with the reclamation.
The Footbridge will help to connect a string of recreational assets together including Waterfront Road Reserve, Gloucester Park and Onehunga Lagoon Reserve. The reclamation will be for recreational use and will include gentle contours to screen and attenuate traffic noise, plantings of hardy Pohutukawa, rain gardens to filter overland flows, a coastal promenade, walkways, cycleway and the continuation of Orpheus Drive for vehicle access.
