Northlands Shopping Centre is located 5km northwest of the Central Business District in Christchurch. Originally built in 1967 and extended in 1979 and 1995, the existing centre was an eclectic mix of piecemeal additions.
Our more recent work with the centre saw it double in size from 20,000m² of retail to over 40,000m², making it the largest enclosed mall in the country at the time.
The development included 117 retail shops, four ‘superstores’, over 1700 carparks and a six-cinema complex. Delivery of this refurbishment commenced in 2002 with road closures, enhancement of the local stream, and conversion of an existing glazed warehouse. This stage was closely followed with new building works and further refurbishment of the whole centre; with completion in 2004 uniting the entire complex.
The design concept for Northlands responds to the unique elements of Canterbury, with materials chosen from the local landscape. Sections of landscaping and a glazed atrium provide areas of rest for visitors to what is otherwise a highly frequented retail environment.
