Jasmax, in conjunction with McConnell Smith & Johnson (MSJ), were commissioned by the Waitemata District Health Board (WDHB) to design a new two level Elective Surgery Centre (ESC) that accommodates fast-track planned inpatient elective surgery.
The imperative was to design a centre that optimised patient / staff operational workflows maximising efficiencies and so enabling more patients to be treated at a lower cost per procedure.
The design also needed to align to the Health Board’s progressive business objectives; with the service models for the ESC based on a radically different approach to the way elective surgical services were provided by WDHB.
The brief challenged the design team to develop a centre that offers patient care in a manner that makes a real difference to the patient experience, clinician experience and effective use of limited resources.
The resultant design is multi-functional and adaptive, allowing the flexible use of areas during peak activity. A two-level purpose built facility, the ground level houses 4 operating theatres, CSSD and Recovery and Consulting rooms. The first level consists of a 40 bed ward comprised of 5 four bed-rooms, 1 two bed HDU and 18 single bedrooms with ensuite facilities. All bedrooms are located on the perimeter of the building with a central core housing communal service areas.
Plantrooms are situated on the southern end of both levels.
North Shore Hospital’s Elective Surgery Centre was designed using BIM, a building information modelling tool that allowed for a 3D prototype of the facility’s design to be scaled prior to construction.
