This project involved the extension of a much-loved existing community facility. As such, the design team engaged in extensive community consultation with a spectrum of stakeholders, which resulted in a facility that is strongly enjoyed and celebrated by its community.
The project includes a new 25 metre lane FINA accredited swimming pool, leisure pool, sauna, teaching pool, toddlers’ splash pool, spa and steam room. It also includes an enlarged fitness centre, new café, foyer area, crèche, changing rooms and extended car park.
Aquatic environments demand highly durable materials. The architecture provides this necessary durability with the addition of colour and detailing that softens and enlivens the space.
The extension provides the people of Howick and Pakuranga with a single integrated and functional community facility. Their response to the architecture and facility itself has been overwhelming.
In particular, to the use of natural light, the brightly coloured steelwork and the provision of adequate seating for spectators, which has created a user-friendly environment that is now a well-utilised community asset
