Jasmax were engaged to undertake a comprehensive study to investigate how Dominion Road could accommodate increased bus services, while still maintaining the unique characteristics that make Dominion Road an iconic street, a residential neighbourhood and a series of commercial centres.
The core challenged involved accommodating the competing priorities of a diverse stakeholder group including NZTA, two local boards, and three business associations, as well as over 600 hundred private dwellings, all within a highly
constrained road corridor. This required strong leadership in public consultation, ensuring stakeholders were continually informed of the project, and had the opportunity to make genuine contributions to overall design.
A vision for the corridor was developed that embraces the region’s volcanic origins and celebrates local identity. It allows for future increases in public and private transport capacity, transport oriented growth along the arterial route and retention and enhancement of character-defining elements such as heritage buildings, property boundaries and plantings.
This report is the culmination of a large body of work Jasmax has undertaken within the Dominion Road Corridor. The project has been well received, in particular, Gary’s ability to engage with the community, supporting Auckland Transport’s public interface. Jasmax’s involvement constituted the longest held consultancy to date on Dominion Road.
