The Bruce Mason Theatre on Auckland’s North Shore is a purpose-made facility designed to provide a highly flexible theatre for a wide range of community groups and international acts. To establish the brief and to test the design through its early stages, an extensive consultation programme was undertaken with Tangata Whenua and user representatives.

Working to a very tight timeframe and budget the project team met the needs of the Council and community. The theatre allows staging and performances in a variety of configurations including conventional proscenium arch, thrust and convention formats. Acoustic engineering has provided the best possible space for a variety of musical performance requirements. The building is designed to be of variable volume in order to achieve reverberation times suitable for both voice and orchestra.

The layout is also extremely flexible with adjustable floor levels that allow it to be used as a banquet and conference centre. The building has a bar and café, and creates a focal point for the local area.

The building has been successful since its construction and is a popular venue choice for theatre, music events and conferences in one of New Zealand’s fastest growing cities.
