This project involved the construction of a new health and wellness centre in Albany, Auckland. The objective of the Apollo Centre is to provide quality clinical needs within surroundings that are friendly and relaxed, thereby promoting wellness. To achieve this, Jasmax led and co-ordinated a team that consisted of town planners and engineers to ensure a close match of client needs and possibilities.
The resulting two storey building places a heavy emphasis on interior and landscape design, creating a level of tranquillity and escape not usually associated with a typical healthcare visit. The central courtyard garden was integral to the initial client brief and as such, it forms the focal point of the building. It features specimen planting and materials which not only promote interaction but also provide a contemplative outlook for tenants and users alike.
The interior features patterned timbers and textures inspired by the adjacent courtyard, giving a warmth and solidity to the space. The building makes strong use of natural light; windows to surrounding landscapes create a sense of openness to the outside world while maintaining privacy through considered orientation and crafted screening. Recognising the unique nature of the healthcare profession, a staff sanctuary opens to the garden courtyard. The combination of screening, soft seating, bookshelves and IT access create a warm and restful escape. In consultation rooms, careful furniture selection fosters a close and intimate relationship between doctors and patients.
