“The sky is the limit…You can take people along a journey of imagination. You can create outcomes and leverage opportunities that you didn’t think were possible. Don’t think in terms of four walls, and you won’t be constrained by them at all.”
Born on Auckland’s North Shore, now living in Christchurch and co-leading Jasmax’s studio there, Alasdair has two decades’ experience at the forefront of some of the most striking interior design projects in the country.
Al joined Jasmax in 2008, fresh from the successful operation of his own studio, Vanillaspace.
Fuelled by an imaginative and passionate design ethos, Alasdair’s philosophy is to pare back, restrain and surprise, ultimately offering elegance and functionality that exceeds clients’ expectations. He loves natural materials and simplifying the complex requirements of large, multi-stakeholder projects.
A repeat national design award-winner, Alasdair seeks out client collaboration and is practical in delivery. Alasdair is renowned for making bow ties and folding paper into collectable sculptures; some of which have pre-figured highly creative interiors in New Zealand, “By making things with my hands, I have come to understand how things go together,” he says. “That has a direct relationship to what I do every day.”
A highly experienced management executive, Al jointly built the Christchurch studio from its beginnings to a team of more than 30. Al is also co-leader of Jasmax’s National Interior Design team managing designers across the four main centres.
“Being able to put a simple, elegant solution in front of the Board or stakeholders. That’s where we demonstrate the true value we can bring,” he says. “Inevitably, it’s going to translate into cost savings, which is music to the CFO’s ears.”
